About this tool
What the Construction Bond Cost Estimator does
Performance and payment bonds are usually priced on a sliding scale: a higher rate on the first part of the contract value and lower rates on each additional band. Rates depend on the contractor’s credit, financial strength and experience, so the schedule here is editable.
It also works as a performance bond cost calculator or a surety bond calculator.
Formula
- Premium = Σ (contract value within each band × band rate)
- Effective rate = premium ÷ contract value
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Contract value | $1,200,000 |
| Rate schedule | 5 entries |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated bond premium | $15,500 |
| Effective rate | 1.29% |
How to read the result
Strong financial statements, a clean claims history and a good relationship with a surety broker improve rates and bonding capacity.
Bond premiums are usually adjusted at completion if the final contract value changes.
