About this tool
What the Compensation Band Builder does
A salary band sets a minimum, midpoint and maximum for a role or grade. The range spread is the maximum as a percentage above the minimum, and the midpoint progression is the step between grades. This builder generates a full structure from a starting midpoint so every grade is consistent.
Formula
- Minimum = midpoint × 2 ÷ (2 + spread)
- Maximum = minimum × (1 + spread)
- Next midpoint = midpoint × (1 + progression)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Midpoint of the lowest grade | $50,000 |
| Range spread | 40% |
| Midpoint progression between grades | 12% |
| Number of grades | 8 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Grade 1 minimum | $41,667 |
| Grade 1 maximum | $58,333 |
| Top grade midpoint | $110,534 |
| Overlap between adjacent grades | 70.0% |
How to read the result
Wider spreads suit senior roles where experience varies more; narrower spreads suit entry-level roles.
Some overlap between grades is normal, but heavy overlap blurs the value of promotion.
